Crash/Burn
Dear Stevie Nicks,
I think you are fabulous and a diva in your own right. I grew up listening to Fleetwood Mac and even today, the sounds of your voice can frequently be heard coming from my record player.
But I have to tell you, covering the song “Crash Into Me” by Dave Matthews Band on your latest album was a terrible, terrible idea. In concert, once or twice would be fine, but the recording is a bland karaoke version of the original. You offer nothing new to improve or make the song your own. Your voice (while extraordinarily lovely in your own music) is poorly suited to work with a tune which has, as it’s greatest strength, the simple sweet melody playing at odds with Dave Matthew’s signature rough, raw voice and odd timbre. Your recording is terribly dull and makes me long to hear the original. And that is saying something, since I almost never want to listen to that original, even though I did enjoy it way more than yours, the first 800 million times I heard it. (It simply got overplayed and I happen to think the man wrote several better songs).
We past “overplayed” on the first go-round with yours. Hearing it piped into the hallways on my lunch hour at work is making me want to stab someone with a fork. (Preferably the person who chooses the satellite radio station or whatever it is they play at work.)
Please take it back.
Sincerely,
Me

don’t tell melanie, but i’m definitely NOT a stevie nicks fan. in fact, i find her voice nasal and grating, and i can’t stand her vibrato. i (obviously) love dave, and although “crash into me” was totally overplayed when it was first released, i still enjoy it in concert. i guess i’m glad she can appreciate dave’s talent as a songwriter, but no. no, her version is just wrong.
