The Eleventh Doctor!
Ok folks, I’m going to come right out and say it… I had never heard of him either, but the “Doctor WHO???” joke is already getting annoying and this has just happened.
So yes. Matt Smith, at 26, is the youngest actor to ever play the Doctor.
Here is his wikipedia entry, so you can learn about what else he’s done.
But really, if you want to know why they picked him, watch this video from the BBC where he talks about what an honor it is to be chosen for the role. After watching that, I get it. I officially approve. The Doctor has to be a certain kind of magnetic personality and I think he has it. I look forward to watching. And he has wacky hair that I sincerely hope they let him keep for the role because I really, really like it.
EDIT: Watch this one too, in which David Tennant and Matt Smith discuss the challenges of the role. I particularly love Matt talking about having to keep the secret while watching Doctor Who with his flatmates!

I think he looks like a good pick. He def. looks like a younger version of David Tennant. I wasn’t too happy when Chris Ecclesten was replaced but Tennant did a good job.

I really liked Ecclesten too and wasn’t quite ready to let go of him when he was done. But I really enjoy David Tennant and so, that worked out. And I think this will too. I think I had to get used to the change in the role being part of the fun of the show, or something like that.
But speaking of… what is Ecclesten up to these days? I was excited to see him on Heroes and then he didn’t end up being a major role (and I didn’t end up sticking that show out later on anyway). I was hoping to see him in more.
hmmm. (note to self) must go look up his recent projects.
