my year of heavy listening in 2013

By bonnie, 1 January, 2014

This year was marked by music for me more than anything else. I’m not sure there has been a year of music since I was in college that will forever be so inexplicably bound to this time and place in my life. Usually there are a handful of songs and a couple full albums that will always feel like that one year in NY or that Spring in Chicago.

This year was different. Transformative.

The albums above are the ones that marked chapters for me: (not in any particular order) –

Alt-J – An Awesome Wave
CHVRCHES – The Bones of What You Believe

Daft Punk – Random Access Memories
The Great Gatsby Soundtrack
Grimes – Visions
Justin Timberlake – the 20/20 Experience
Jun Miyake – Stolen From Strangers
Lorde – The Love Club EP and Pure Heroine
Jay-Z – Magna Carta, Holy Grail
Beyoncé (self-titled)
Metric – Synthetica
Of Monsters and Men – My Head is an Animal
Sleigh Bells – Bitter Rivels
Waxahatchee – Cerulean Salt
Yeah Yeah Yeah’s – Mosquito

(others that I forgot to post little album covers for, but also rocked my year)
the Naked and Famous – In Rolling Waves
Arcade Fire – Reflektor
the Head and the Heart – Let’s Be Still
Polica – Shulamith
Deafheaven – Sunbather

And these are the songs – mixes of new and old –  the playlists that are my own personal seasonal soundtracks: (all on spotify)

winter clothes (bitter end of winter 2013)

something good tonight (the spring thaw)

 summer in three parts –

part one: how fire feels (june)

part two: trails (midsummer)

part three: the stubborn deep (end of summer)

dragon days (fall)

sugar + shadows (closing out 2013)

What do you think?
