Let’s Discuss: Minding One’s Own Business

Ahem.  ((pulls over soapbox))

I know it’s none of my business, but…

1.  No, you don’t.  You are being intrusive and you are aware of it, you just think it’s ok as long as you preface it with the intentional mistruth “I know it’s none of my business, but…”

2.  You are relying on that fact that most people will shrug and assume you meant well.  Secretly, you didn’t mean well.  You meant to pry.  And you know it.

3.  So this phrase is a nosy, pushy, lie.   Because if you did understand that it was simply not your business, you would shut the fuck up and not offer your opinion.

4. Guess what? Your opinion most likely isn’t actually even relevant to whatever it is you are needlessly prying into.  Most times that people select this particular phrase, they are offering an outsider’s view of a situation they don’t fully understand.

In conclusion:

Please don’t be this person.   Please don’t use this phrase as the crutch that allows you to douchebag your way into conversations or issues that have nothing to do with you.

If they wanted your two cents, they would have asked.

This has been a public service announcement from the List of Now.
