Buddy
There has to be someone in this state who loves Bad Dance Movies as much as I do.
I’m grumpy. Because Step Up 2: The Streets is no longer in the multiplexes. And truly great Bad Dance Movies deserve to be viewed in the theater. Alas, since moving to RI, my usual bad dance movie enthusiasts are all far away.
And let me be clear, bad refers to the film on a whole, NOT the dancing. The dancing rocks and is the main reason to watch the Bad Dance Movies. The heckling and mocking, of course, being the other reason, but not impetus alone.
This is the golden formula:
plot = bad or cliche, but fun or funny
acting = poor to moderate
dancing = awesome and frequent.
bonus points: the “spontaneous, yet choreographed public dance number” (in fact that one doesn’t even need to be in a Bad Dance Movie, per se… it can be shoved into ANY Bad Movie and provide bonus points)
This is why Step Up the first didn’t quite do it for me. The dancing wasn’t frequent enough and the plot wasn’t fun or so terrible that it was funny. It took itself too seriously, but didn’t go far enough to make the golden jump into camp (a la Center Stage). But I had high hopes for Step Up 2: The Streets, it looked like the Bad Dance Movie version of 8 Mile. That’s a good thing, by the way.
So I know this is a new blog and all, but if there are any Bad Dance Movie lovers out there reading, speak up! Especially if you live in Rhode Island. Because I need a buddy.
