compulsive commentary

Let the wild rumpus begin!

Where the Wild Things Are is one of my favorite books of all time.  I was kind of annoyed when I first heard they were making a movie out of it.   For two reasons:

1. Because they are already totally bastardizing my entire childhood with all the of the crappy remakes and adaptations in the works.   Like this one.  And this one.   Oh and I can’t forget this half-assed sequel to the scary and awesome Witch Mountain movies.

AND

2.  Because  most children’s movies these days are dumbed-down piecs of sh*t with totally uninteresting animation.

Seriously!  I look back at the movies like Labyrinth that I used to watch over and over and I wonder why there aren’t loads of magical movies are for kids now.  For every one that looks even decent, there is a crapload of Hannah Montana or Ice Age in Madagascar with Dancing Penguins.

I soon felt assured that I had no reason to be worried.   After looking into more about the film, I found out several interesting things that made me more excited for this film – Spike Jonze writing + directing, Dave Eggars co-writing, Karen O scoring… yes, this was getting better and better.

And then pictures started surfacing and holy hell, does it look amazing!

Today there is an unbelievably beautiful trailer out.  I am not even going to embed it, just please click on this link to go to Apple Trailers and watch as big and as High-Def as you possibly can.

Along with Coraline and Tim Burton’s upcoming Alice in Wonderland (and of course the Harry Potter films), I am hoping that more visionary films like this will be coming along for today’s youth.   There are tons of amazing books out there, but kids also need the films that are a little bit weird, a little bit spooky and totally otherworldly magical.
