farmgrrrl inspiration
Lots of Noise just reposted a great article (originally printed in last Summer’s Bust and scanned in old-school, for our reading enjoyment) and I’m so glad, because I might never have caught it otherwise.
Its called Soil Sisters and its about female urban farmers in Providence. So go read it.
I’m definitely planning to seek out some of these people at the farmers’ markets and go to their events and support them in any way I can. I strongly encourage any Rhode Islanders reading to do the same.
It’s also incredibly inspiring to read about them, when I’ve been staring out at my backyard, wondering where and how to start to turn my little patch of land into some well-organized gardens… a little farm really, because I don’t just want a hobby. I want to be growing herbs, veggies and fruits. I want to be composting on a big scale and having “areas” of the yard designated for purposes… not just “pretty”. I actually have talked a lot about building a greenhouse in back of my painting studio, so that I can move a lot of plants indoors in other seasons.
I think its all do-able, I just need to research a lot and work a lot and maybe it won’t all come together this year. I’ve been really excited in general, but hesitant to start NOW (and its MAY already, I really should have started as soon as the ground thawed). So this article couldn’t have popped up for me at a better time. Totally the inspiration kick I needed.
